Nothing Was Missing

At Bloomwood in Melbourne, a Dubai Chocolate Flower arrived on the plate. I pressed my fork in.

Warm, round lights hung from the ceiling at Bloomwood.

Their soft, paper-like glow reminded me of Isamu Noguchi's Akari lamps.

Beneath them, I opened a book on Zen.

In front of me sat a matcha latte. On the plate, a Dubai Chocolate Flower opened like a blossom.

I pressed my fork into it.

Crack.

The thin layers of pastry broke apart, revealing the chocolate-rich filling beneath.

I took a bite.

Crunch.

First came the toasted scent of butter and wheat.

Then the mellow pistachio and kataifi burst through.

The fine strands shattered between my teeth, making tiny sounds inside my mouth.

Crunch. Crunch. A brittle little crackle.

Beneath the soft pistachio cream, the toasted kataifi appeared again and again, dry and crisp against the smooth filling.

The texture was irresistible.

Another bite.

With every mouthful came a little more of the dark chocolate's bitterness.

I lifted the matcha latte.

Behind the warm milk, the bitterness of matcha emerged, sweeping away the sweetness that lingered on my tongue.

Another bite.

This time, the part with more cream.

Then the place where I could see more of the filling.

Crunch, crunch.

Even as I chewed, my eyes were already searching the pastry for the next, most delicious-looking piece.

One more bite.

Then another.

My mouth was full of the sweet fragrance of pistachio and chocolate.

Then, almost without thinking, I looked back at my book.

Perfect and sufficient, nothing is lacking.

Nothing is lacking.

The warm light rested across the page.

I looked down at the plate.

Half of the flower remained.

But strangely, I was no longer craving for the next piece.

The fragrance of pistachio was still on my tongue.

Somewhere near my back teeth, a tiny fragment of kataifi remained.

Crackle.

I bit down, and it disappeared.

I put down my fork.

I would ask them to box the rest.

Then I lifted my cup and drank the last little mouthful of matcha from the bottom.

Perfect and sufficient, nothing is lacking.
